Agency Fish commissioned me to illustrate these maps to accompany an article for Garuda Indonesia’s inflight magazine, Colours. The textures and background were made with watercolor. Now that I’ve read up on Indonesia; I’d really love to visit. Thanks to Nanda Giftanina for the opportunity!

Lotta Nieminen is a Finnish illustrator and designer whose work I’ve recently discovered. She’s amazing! I love her use of color and texture and her maps are really delightful.

This is a map I made for looloo. The app is a “friend-powered guidebook to Manila’s best places.” And if you sign up for their launch, you could win a free iPhone 4s!
I was excited when EJ first contacted me about the map because I’m an amateur foodie and I love discovering new restaurants. I think the only place I’ve been to on the map is Charlie’s Grind and Grill. Drawing the icons was no easy feat because in the process of trying to make it look yummy, I also got hungry!

This illustration is based on the 74th and 75th Hunger Games arenas. The books were obviously inspired by Koushun Takami’s Battle Royale, which is a fantastic dystopian novel about a post-war totalitarian Japanese society that randomly selects students for a fight to the death in the Program. I normally prefer “happier” fantasy and science fiction, but reading dystopian books like Battle Royale, Animal Farm, and Nineteen Eighty-Four help me reflect on how society needs to balance the demands of progress with the standards of morality.
The most morbidly delicious part about The Hunger Gamestrilogy was reading how the Capitol found ways to completely dominate the Districts. The highlight of all this torture, of course, was the arena, where the tributes were tortured physically and the Districts were tortured emotionally. I liked reading the descriptions of the various traps and menaces the tributes had to overcome. I did feel sorry for them, but at the same time I thought that the Capitol’s Gamemakers did a pretty good job! Of course I couldn’t resist the call to illustrate the arenas.
The maps are probably inaccurate because I didn’t have an official map and had to do some guesswork based on the books. However, the Hunger Games wikia and alternatecoppa’s 75th arena visual guide were very helpful.

Announcing my new project, Maps of the Worlds. First map: an unofficial and funny map of Ateneo de Manila University. Have a look-see!
I had a bout of nostalgia so I drew an unofficial, inaccurate, but fun map of my alma mater, Ateneo de Manila University. It covers the college campus only and it’s full of references I suppose only students, faculty, staff, or alumni would understand. I had the best time at Ateneo so I hope this map conveys what an absolute wonder university was for me.
Special routes: what to do when you forget your ID, where to take your swagger, how to frolic like a hipster, and what happens when your batch number is 14594890366.
